I treat patients with thrombi (blood clots) in the heart, the brain, the lung, and the legs. Small particles in the blood called platelets start the process of forming blood clots. My laboratory discovered that platelets become reprogrammed in diseases such as heart attack and peripheral artery disease. When platelets are reprogrammed, they do not respond as predicted to medications. Platelets can also be considered as circulating messengers, carrying information back and forth between blood vessels and organs in the body. A major goal of my research is to understand the process of platelet reprogramming, and to identify additional proteins on platelets which could be targets for new medications.
Scott Cameron, MD, PhD, is Section Head, Vascular Medicine in the Tomsich Family Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. He is a specialist in blood vessel disorders and platelet dysfunction and sees patients at Cleveland Clinic main campus.
Dr. Cameron currently is the Principal Investigator (PI) on National Institutes of Health-funded studies since 2015 on cardiovascular complications that develop after heart attack and also on aortic aneurysmal disease and dysregulated platelet function. He has been PI or co-PI on multiple basic, translational and clinical research studies on heart attack, arterial disease, aneurysms, pulmonary embolism and COVID-19-related thrombosis. Dr. Cameron has co-authored more than 70 scientific papers and editorials in peer-reviewed medical journals on platelet disorders and vascular medicine and has been an invited lecturer at numerous international and national medical meetings and conferences. He is also on the American Board of Internal Medicine question committee for Cardiovascular Disease.
Dr. Cameron is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Society of Vascular Medicine. He sits on various counsels of the American Heart Association. He is a frequent peer reviewer for multiple medical journals including the British Medical Journal, the American Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Circulation, Circulation Research, JACC, the Journal of Clinical Investigation, and the Journal of Thrombosis and Thrombolysis. He is also on the Editorial Board of ATVB, and he is an Associate Editor of Vascular Medicine.

We are a basic and translational research laboratory that studies the adaptive platelet phenotype in vascular and thrombotic disorders. Platelets are small anucleate blood particles which play an important role in thrombosis, hemostasis, and inflammation.
Our laboratory was the first to identify that platelets are reprogrammed from their native, healthy state to a dysregulated state in the circulation at the time of acute myocardial infarction. We have since demonstrated that the anucleate platelet is sensitive to its external environment in vivo and ex vivo, and capable of altering post-receptor signal transduction events in other cardiovascular diseases including peripheral artery diseae, aortic aneeurysmal disease, varicose veins, and lipedema. This changes the response of platelets to anti-platelet medications. Current and recent work has focused on sex-dependent differences in vascular and thrombotic diseases, bidirectional communication between blood vessels and platelets, and capitalizing on platelets as circulating biosensors to better understand diseases.
Our primary observations are made in humans and in privileged human tissue accessible through our academic clinical practice. An advantage of this approach is that it assures translatibility since many mechanistic studies in animals do not translate into a human therapeutic intervention. We create murine models of diseases to further explore mechanisms and use a variety of molecular, biochemical, and cellular assays for a comprehensive and mechanistic investigation.
Diseases we study: aneurysmal disease, aortic rupture, venous insufficiency, amyloidosis, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, SARS-CoV-2, Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19; rare vascular and metabolic disorders (fibromuscular dysplasia, spontaneous coronary artery dissection, Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome, lipedema).
Disease mechanisms we study: acute and chronic alterations in the circulating platelet phenotype, platelet-mediated remodeling of distant vascular and cardiac tissue, sex-dependent differences in aneurysmal disease, sex-dependent differences in platelet responses to medications, biomechanical platelet activation, signal transduction, utilization of platelets as circulating biosensors, thrombus resolution, outcomes in thrombotic and vascular diseases, protein kinases and signal transduction, proteomics.
Biomedical focus: signal transduction, pharmacology, pathophysiology, biochemistry, vascular medicine, cardiology, platelet function, thrombosis, clinical chemistry, biomarker discovery, 'omics.
We are a friendly, collaborative laboratory with a keen interest in the happiness and career development of all laboratory members. We celebrate each lab member's professional as well as personal success. We collaborate widely, and choose our collaborators carefully. Several Cameron lab alumni have been accepted to top tier Ph.D. programs and M.D. programs over the last 4 years. Our training environment is particularly well-suited for aspiring physician scientists. A position is available for an exceptionally motivated M.D./Ph.D. student. M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. students should send a recent CV and a one paragraph statement of interest to the PI before meeting.

Learn MorePlatelet protein GPVI was revealed as a biomarker for abdominal aortic aneurysm screening (AAA).
The program, which has funded 21 research teams since 2015, has a proven record of supporting projects that go on to attract large external grants.
Dr. Cameron will study the mechanistic interaction between platelets and how they emerge as circulating biosensors, releasing proteins that are useful biomarkers for distinguishing fast- from slow-growing aneurysms.
