Our laboratory studies how the brain controls skilled movements, and how changes in the ways the brain works can affect movement. Our first step is to understand how diseases or conditions such as Parkinson's disease, stroke or concussion affect movement and thinking. Once we identify the specific problems associated with these conditions, we then develop and test treatments or ways of monitoring to improve movement and thinking. Our treatment options range from exercise to deep brain stimulation (inserting an electrode that provides an electrical impulse in the brain), a newer treatment for Parkinson’s disease.

The aim of my research is to understand structure-function relationships within the central nervous system and the upper extremity. In particular, my research is focused on determining how grasping forces and torques are controlled and coordinated during functional dexterous manipulations. Investigation of movement patterns produced by different patient groups and healthy adults provides a window into the brain and the control of voluntary movement.
Our current studies work with Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients to determine the role of the basal ganglia in movement control. For instance, we have shown that unilateral deep brain stimulation provides long-term bilateral motor benefits. We are also evaluating the effects of assisted and voluntary exercise on PD motor function. These studies suggest that assisted exercise increases activation patterns within the brain. The objective and quantitative assessment of motor function will aid in disease diagnostic capability and specificity, disease progression and intervention efficacy for patients in whom movement is compromised.
Watch a video showing how the lab is using immersive virtual reality experience. It uses an omnidirectional treadmill to solve a common problem with virtual reality sickness. We are now testing the platform to see if it could be used to identify Parkinson's disease, and other neurodegenerative diseases, before symptoms start. Learn more.

Cleveland Clinic and Microsoft collaboration aims to commercialize the technology – a major step for utilizing augmented reality in health care.
A digital solution engaging the brain and body could improve therapy for people with Parkinson’s disease.
Dr. Misra-Hebert and colleagues assessed a Cleveland Clinic model’s ability to predict the likelihood that a patient would need to be readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of discharge.
In this three-year clinical study, Drs. Alberts and Baker will utilize virtual reality technology to isolate the causes of freezing of gait, a debilitating symptom of Parkinson’s disease, thanks to support from the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
In addition to improving grasping control and coordination, Dr. Alberts and his lab found that an eight-week lower extremity exercise intervention may enhance central nervous system functioning.
Using an application that is readily available on a mobile device, Dr. Alberts and his lab have created a convenient and effective method to determine the effects of concussion on performance.
Dr. Alberts and his team have found that even short sessions of aerobic exercise can bring gains in cardiopulmonary function for patients with Parkinson’s disease.
Dr. Alberts is teaming up with the National Football Players Association to help identify, treat and prevent brain disorders.
With a new $6.7 million grant from NIH, Drs. Alberts and Rao will test if home-based, high-intensity cycling may help prevent sedentary adults who carry the highest risk Alzheimer’s-related gene variant from developing the disease.
